IBPS - PO  EXAM  -  THE  METHOD  ADOPTED   TO  DECIDE ABOUT FAIL AND PASS CANDIDATES and Who Will Be Called for Interview

The list of successful and failed candidates who appeared in Probationary Officers exam conducted by IBPS sometime in last of 2011, has since been declared.   This was the first examination for PO conducted by IBPS under the new pattern.   Now things are becoming clearly as to the methods adopted by IBPS for this exam.  We discuss some of the issues which can be great interest to candidates who appeared last year and also to those who intend to appear in the forthcoming examination of 2012:-

  • You need to score a minimum qualifying marks as decided by IBPS  in each of the subjects viz. Test of Reasoning; English Language; Quantative  Aptitude ;  General Awareness; and Computer Knowledge.

  • In case the candidate fails to obtain the minimum qualifying marks he will be treated as Failed and his paper of the "Descriptive Test" will not be evaluated at all.

  •  Once the candidate has obtained the minimum qualifying marks in each of the objective Test papers, the Descriptive Test will be evaluated.  The candidate is required to qualify in this exam.

  • Thus, a candidate who has scored the minimum qualifying marks in each of the paper and has qualified in the Descriptive Test is declared as Passed and will receive his / her Scorecard in having passed the exam.   The details as to the methodology to be adopted for calculation of the Standard Score is given in a separate article, the link for which is given at the end of this article.

  • Such candidates who are declared passed in the CWE - PO exam will be eligible to apply for the posts to be advertised by different banks in case they meet the minimum criteria of  Total Standard Score and the minimum cut off marks in any of the subject (s).

  • Based on the applications received and the number of vacancies announced in the advts, the number of candidates called for interview will be normally 3 times the number of vacancies.

  •  The procedure for final selection will be announced by each bank in its advertisement, which will be usually based on the total marks obtained in Standard Score and the marks obtained in the interview.

Some Frequently Asked Questions by Candidates

Q1 : I attempted 40 questions in English language (or some other exam)  but my scorecard shows that I have been awarded 0 (zero) score.  How is it possible ?

Ans : This is possible because IBPS has announced that there will be negative marking for the wrong answers.  For each wrong answer the candidates score is reduced by 0.25 marks.  Thus, if a candidate has attempted 40 questions of 1 mark each, and the wrong answers are for 33 questions and correct answers are only for 7 questions, then he / she will get 7 marks for correct answers and 8.25 negative  marks.  This will lead to awarding of zero marks.

Q2 : I have scored more than the minimum qualifying marks in each of the objective type papers, but still I have been shown as FAILED.

Ans : This means that you have failed to clear the Descriptive Test though you have performed well in the objective test papers

Q3 : IBPS has not shown the marks obtained by me in the descriptive test paper ?

Ans : The descriptive test paper is qualifying exam and is evaluated only if you have scored the minimum qualifying marks in each of the objective type test paper.  Thus, the descriptive test paper might not have been evaluated at all if you have failed to score the minimum marks  in each of the objective type paper.

Q4 : I have passed in the IBPS CWE PO, but still my application has not been accepted by a particular bank.

Ans : Each bank announces its own cut off Standard Score (total) and subjective wise standard score, and thus if you have failed to obtain above those cut off marks, you will not be eligible even to apply for the vacancies announced in that bank.

Q5 : I have obtained Standard Score more than the minimum cut off required by a bank in its advertisement but I have still not been called for interview.

Ans :  This can happen if the applications received by the bank from the candidates who have scored more than the cut off marks are in large number.  Normally, the total number of candidates called for the final interview are three times the number of vacancies announced in the advertisement.

Q6 : I did quite well  in the exam but my score is very low.   Can I go for re-evaluation of my test papers?

Ans : At present there is no procedure available for re-evaluation of the test papers
