"What makes people think that union leaders have some underhand dealings?"

Karunakaran Duraisamy

I joined the banking industry in the year 1973. Now I am retired under VRS 2000. Right from the entry into bank, I am seeing the incapacity of our union leaders in negotiating a reasonable wage accord. On the contrary, SBI unions resorted to an indefinite strike and got PF,Pension and gratuity. Whereas our Union leaders are supposed to be struggling for a settlement which may be lesser than SBI's. In what way we are inferior to SBI employees? Are they doing more work than nationalised bank employees?

Our unions are the strongest in India and if given a call we can stall the finance world and make the govt./IBA budge for our demands. Then why this leaders are taking this much time and are negotiating for an unattractive settlement that can match neither the govt. salary nor the SBI's.

In fact some drama rather under hand dealing between the leaders and IBA is going on.

Receently for a reasonable pension as per Pension rules, we retired people had to fight the IBA upto Supreme Court and got the 5 year addition in calculating the pension. I got around Rs1,40,000/- as arrears ( without interest) recently. The unions were keeping quite so far. The IBA also shamelessly went upto Supreme Court to deny the reasonable pension as per the Act.

This is the face of our IBA and the Union Leaders. They are hand and glove. Be ware of their underhand dealings.

"WAGE REVISION (with out vision)- OPINION POLL

No doubt it is most discussed and disturbing topic among Bankers as to what fortune or misfortune is awaiting us in the form of wage revision. Let us hope that our vision is not lost after this revision. I wish you share your opinion on the following points.

Do we deserve revision beyond 17.5% in the light of superior performance of Indian banks when compared to failure of major Banks of western countries due to recession?

Bank officer was drawing better pay than Group A officer of Central Govt in 1979.Now bank officer’s pay can be at best compared with that of a Clerk in Central Govt. Let 7th Pay revision come in to effect , I am afraid bank officer’s pay may not be at par with Peon in Central Govt. Do we deserve this treatment ?

We have proved by two day strike that we are united and strong, but the end result we are at the mercy of IBA . Do we have the strength and guts to fight till parity of scales is achieved with central govt employees?
